Bryson City NC is called the “Gateway to the Smokies,” this land that the Cherokee Indians called “Shaconage” which means “the place of blue smoke.” This is, indeed, a beautiful way to describe the misty blue haze that settles down around the mountaintops of Swain County, North Carolina. Swain County is home to the charming town of Bryson City, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Cherokee Indian Reservation. Bryson City is the county seat of Swain County with a population of approximately 1,200 residents, but that number swells during the summer months when tourists descend on the area.
